Chronotons

Chronotons

How would you rate yourself with your level of nerd? This is not to put anyone in a box but rather to help you understand who you are as an out-of-the-box thinker. We all have certain level of Nerdatonium in our blood that makes us the unique people that we are.
Here are the levels that we do know about. Levy classified them in order to understand how people think as nerds. The three he mentioned are below.
Where you do rate yourself?

Class Five Nerd
You like ideas, but don’t always have to share them.
You might choose a physical activity over a mental one most of the time.
You have smarts, but don’t really want to be associated with other thinkers.
You are very comfortable in a social setting.
Class Three Nerd
You are comfortable being a listener, but will share ideas freely.
You choose an activity that suits your needs at any given time.
You don’t have a problem being seen as a out-of-the-box thinker.
There are times you fit into a social setting and other times you can feel a bit awkward.

Class One Nerd
You like to share your ideas freely, even if others don’t seem interested.
You would rather do a mental activity over anything physical.
You are thinker and
love to be around others like me most of the time, or by myself.
I can be rather awkward in a social setting at times.

If you ask me, I would love to say that I am a Class Three Nerd. However,
I tend to lean towards a 2.5 or a 2.0 in reality. Again, this is for your own self and something to think about as you interact with others. I think knowing how people think and interact with others helps you to be a little more patient and understanding of others around you.

Your thoughts?

Okay, right off I am a superhero fan. Spiderman is my favorite hero because is an everyday man, doesn’t have a lot, but he has these superpowers thrust upon him. Talk about a hero for the underdog, right?

I am excited about the influx of superhero movies that have hit us in a great deluge. Marvel has really lived up to its name. I never was an Avengers fan, but now I have been introduced to the universe. I am hooked.

I grew up with DC and the Justice League. I knew Superman, Batman, Aquaman, Wonder Women, etc. very well. I think it will take a while, however, the Justice League will have its time in the sun as well.

In Chronolocity: Fistful of Chronotons, Levy Roarke has a hero complex. He relates more with Iron Man because of his mechanical abilities. Levy is used to fighting his battles alone, but that all changes when he meets a group of historical figures as children. They have all been taken from their particular time in order to reboot history. This forces an seven year old, Thomas Edison, an eight year old Martin Luther King Jr., and a fourteen-year old Albert Einstein to become part of Levy’s own superhero line up in order to save history.

Levy squints. “Has anyone ever shown you how dangerous it is to be selfish?”
“What?” Tom mutters.
Levy waves that one off. “Okay, bad choice of words. You’re just thinking about yourself.”
“Hey!”
Junior pats Tom’s shoulder. “We are a team, right?”
Tom smiles weakly.
Junior puts and hand on both of their shoulders. “You can trust that Levy knows what he is doing. Listen to him.”

Being a loner and a bit untrusting of others, Levy often takes on his hero duties on his own.Faced with a greater challenge than he had before, they become a team of heroes who want to save history from unraveling. It is a daunting and probably impossible task for one twelve-year-old boy, but when the combine forces, they have a greater chance to take on the monumental task ahead.

Every hero needs a team. They become more than the sum of their parts. Superman, no matter how powerful he is, does have a weakness that can destroy him. The others0 on his team can fight when he can’t and are strong when he isn’t. So, everyone needs to be part of a team.

Long live the superhero age! I hope we will enjoy their adventures for years to come.

Who is your superhero and why do you relate to them?

Time travel 2

Time travel

In the story, Chronolocity, my character, Levy Roarke experiences time travel. He is yanked from the present into the distant past by a time traveler who is doing a reimagining of history.

“No way!”  He looks at the box in his other hand.  He sets it down.  “Wait, hold it.”  Levy scoots back like the box is about to explode.  “This bag, this stuff…” He holds his head.

“It’s from an alternate time line?  Parallel universe?  Does it even really exist?  Am I going to explode by eating something that belongs in another reality?”

Tasty, but deadly.

Time travel has always interested me. What would happen if we did go back and visit the past? Or the future. Would anything I do effect the flow of time, or is it history going to happen whether I try to tamper with it or not?

Here are some incidents that I have seen in movies. Are the accurate or not?

Back to the Future: Marty knocks his father out of the way, thus becoming the object of his mother’s affections. He has to undo what he has done in order to not be erased from history.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: Captain Cisco’s favorite historical hero, Bell is killed when his crew accidentally travels back to the past. The captain knows story and assumes his role instead, maintaining the original time line for the most part.

The Time Machine: Dr. Alexander Hartdegen looses his wife to murder. He builds a time machine in order to go back and save her. When he does prevent her murder, she is shortly killed in another accident.

So, here are three theoretical outcomes of time travel:

  1. If you tamper with time, it could unravel all we know.
  2. Time can be altered without any life-changing effects.
  3. Destiny will not allow for any changes. It will self-correct if needed.

All of these are theories, but which one do you subscribe to?

Um, okay here is another place that Nerdists have been divided. You either like Star Trek or Star Wars. This is what I am hearing from the fans. It is assumed that you have to be in one universe of the other.

Why?

Seriously, why do we have to choose between the two? They are both great in their own right. There is such diversity between them that these two shows don’t complete with each other. What’s next, I will have to choose between Harry Potter, Narnia, or Lord of the Rings? I haven’t heard anything about voting for only one fantasy francize, so why is there even an issue.

Please don’t make me decide if I like Spiderman with Toby MacGuire or the Amazing Spiderman with Andrew Garfield. I enjoy them both for different reasons. It’s the same issue with Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder or Johnny Deep. I despised the idea of tampering with one of my top five favorite childhood movies of all time. However, they created something not to replace the classic, but came up with a whole new retelling.

My question again is why do we have to chose? Last time I checked, it was a free country where we have lots of great choices. This is the essence of diversity, right?

May the force be with you and live long and prosper.

Rhet and Link

Rhet and Link

Uh, I have often heard that Nerds and Geeks are not the same thing. In fact if you have ever heard of Good Mythical Morning with Rhett and Link, they have who brought that age-old battle to a head.

Whoa, can’t we all just get along?

I decided to look both terms up.

nerd

nərd/

noun

informal

  • a foolish or contemptible person who lacks social skills or is boringly studious.

“one of those nerds who never asked a girl to dance”

synonyms:

bore; More

  • a single-minded expert in a particular technical field.

“a computer nerd”

geek

ɡēk/

noun

informal

  • 1.

an unfashionable or socially inept person.

  • 2.

a carnival performer who performs wild acts.

verb

  • 1.

engage in or discuss computer-related tasks obsessively or with great attention to technical detail.

“we all geeked out for a bit and exchanged ICQ/MSN/AOL/website information”

There really isn’t a lot of difference so why is there any antagonism in the terms?

So, Nerdatonium is present in anyone who thinks, not matter what their designation might be. (Ah, well of course unless you have a Borg designation that is.)

For many years I struggled with finding my way in life. They say most guys are into sports, working on cars, and would rather be the strong silent type. When you aren’t into any of those sometimes you are made to feel less of a man.

However, I discovered Star Trek, Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and a whole stream of super hero books, TV shows, etc. At first I enjoyed these with my brother and it was something we shared in common. Soon, thought, I found kids at school, a few, who we had this in common. Some of these guys, were the cool guys that I considered dudes who had it together. That is when I realized that there were other options of activities that I could enjoy and still be a young man.

As an adult I went to found nerds at work, school, and church. They were everywhere. Both of the stepsons and daughter attended academic decathlons or summits where Brainiacs showed up in droves. You could feel the brainpower and electric ideas humming in the room. It felt like home.

That is why I wanted to write a series about a boy like me who struggles to understand how is own mind works. I think Levy Roarke’s internal and external battles are our own. He represents a nerd who discovers how he fits into the world and can actually make history. I hope that this Chronolocity Hexatron (a six-sided molecular object) will help those who are nerds to understand their own uniqueness and that they are not alone in the world.

I think inside all of us is a hero that wants a chance to do something great. You know, we all want to change the world in some way. Can you relate? What can a nerd to that compares with those who do great almost superhuman things?

In my novel, Chronolocity, our character, Levy finds out, a hero is someone who does not have to wear a cape. It is someone who may not be able to leap a building at a single bound, but the can stand up for those weaker than they are. Their real strength is that of character and conviction to do what is right.

The best heroes aren’t perfect. They have flaws, make mistakes, and even find what brainpower and brainpower gives out, however, they get up again. Levy had an opportunity to help a fellow nerd, but chose rather to ignore his plead. He has regrets and wishes he had made a better choice.

Are you a deep thinker or a quick thinker? Are you creative and see designs in everything? Are you a manager of fine details or do you see the big picture? These are abilities that you might have that are needed right now.

I really think the difference between a hero and a villain is their strength of character. They might not always make right choices, but the best heroes grow and learn from their mistakes. They give all they have to be all they can to help all who need their help. Isn’t that what makes a hero a hero?

Chroton 8

Entry #2
VS

Chroton 8

Ever had a nemesis? Normally, it’s a person who gives you a hard time for being different. They tease or shove you about just for being nerdish. Sadly, it can be a fellow nerd who has have forgotten that brainiacs help each other out, not cut each other down, to make themselves look smarter.

However, have you ever thought of a nemesis being the thoughts and emotions battling inside your own head? Join the club
They call me Levy the Brainiac. It’s because in my head there are always ideas brewing and wheels turning. He holds his head with his hands. Even now when everything is quiet in the school Science lab, those voices have a fact, opinion, or concern that have to be aired.
You’re almost done. No one is here to bug you. So stay focused.
There goes my logical side.
Don’t burn yourself out. You need to eat something and take a break sometime. You’ve been at this for days.
And my emotions always have to jump in. He sighs. There are times I wish I was a computer or a robot, no an android. That way I wouldn’t have emotions getting in the way.
In the story, Chronolocity, Levy struggles with his thought life. What I mean is he often has detailed discussions, dialogs, debates, and decisions with the two halves of his brain. Have you ever had discussions like that? You have to weigh and decide sometimes between your logic and emotions when tough decisions have to be made?

Levy’s logical left side he nicknames Brainiac. He tends to favor and lean more heavily on his analytical self. On the other side he has Arby, which is named for his emotional right brain. In many ways he is like the referee or judge between the two.

Sometimes I feel like a referee or some sort of moderator inside my own head. Levy rubs his temples in slow circles. He breathes slowly through his nose. That’s the part that worries me having a brain like mine. I wonder if I’m the only one who has this problem?

As an after thought, the best way to describe this relationship comes from the crew of the Starship Enterprise. You remember the relationship that Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and Dr. McCoy had? While Spock was the voice of logic and reason, Dr. McCoy was passion and emotion. Captain Kirk was the one stuck in the middle trying to unify them together as a family. I guess he was like the spirit of unity trying to keep his crew together.

Do other people have these kinds of debates in their heads or is just me becoming a mad scientist, after all?
You don’t have the time for silly things like love.
Well, I can still admire her from afar.
Love is a magical thing, Levy. It changes people.
I am not in love. Levy’s heart did a summersault.
Really?
Okay, how about seriously like her.
Yeah…that’s good.

Levy tries the best he can to live with these opposing forces. If the truth be told he tends to downplay Arby and favor Brainiac. So much so that other people have given him that nickname. Being able to see his two halves work together and not against each other is his real struggle. I guess you could say that self vs. self can be on the toughest challenges we face within ourselves.

Any thoughts on this topic?

You’ve heard of Oxygen, Nitrogen, Argon, Uranium, and even Einsteinium. Correct? These of course are part of the Periodic Table of Elements. But I bet you have never heard of Nerdatonium.

If we are part of the Realm of Nerdatonium, what does that term mean anyway? My character, twelve-year-old inventor Levy Roarke, coined the word Nerdatonium. This is his theory about how nerds stand out among what he called, “Normies,” or the everyday person.

It is an element present in all those who are considered nerds or nerdians. Instead of taking that as a put down they see it as his badge of honor. It makes them who they are.

“Yeah, I know I make up my own words but I think the elemental building block of a nerd being Nerdatonium is pretty cool in its own way.”

-Levy Roarke
Here is a snippet from Levy’s journal describing the term.

I am what you call a grunt on the food chain here at Bill Gates Charter. We all know the links on that chain. I am not only a Newbie, but a Class Three Nerd. Yep, I consider myself a moderate in Nerdom. Some dudes and dudettes can hide their nerdiness behind a sport or a cool instrument. Others like me can look cool but I will admit it’s what I say that puts me on the radar. All I need to do is hear someone mention a sci-fi classic or superhero flick and my mouth starts yabbering.

He classifies the five levels of Nerdatonium. Class One being the most potent and most recognizable kind of nerd and Class Five being the least amount present in an out-of-the box thinker. Levy classifies himself as a Class Three nerd. He can blend in as needed, but depending on the topic being discussed his nerdy ways surface.

I am not a Class One Nerd because I can fit in a social situation without embarrassing myself. I know some guys who are so smart, but they don’t get the clue when to stop talking. That’s some Brainiac’s curse: the social setting. It can be some people’s Kryptonite if you know what I mean. They think everyone, even the Normies, are totally into their idea, but sadly, that look of brain dead on their face is real. People don’t always get that smart guy or girl.

Chandler, who has been my bud since Elementary, is a five. Yeah, he has been trying to hide his brains behind humor and coolness for years. Let’s just say he has always been my social guru dude.

In my next entry we will look at ways of knowing what Class you might fall under. Remember this is not to put people in a box or stereotype them. This is rather a way to understand how others think and how they interact with others. This way you know how to talk to them, listen, and more patient with others quirks and eccentricities.

What are your thoughts about your Nerdatonium in your life?
